Updata Partners Closes Total Defense Investment

Completes Carve Out from CA Technologies
RESTON, VA, JUNE 20, 2011 —
Updata Partners, a leading technology-focused growth equity investor, announced today that it completed the carve out of Total Defense, Inc. from CA Technologies. Total Defense is a global leader in malware threat detection and anti-crimeware solutions. The Company was previously the Internet Security Business Unit of CA Technologies before being established by Updata as an independent company. IDC recently ranked the business unit as among the top ten providers of endpoint security solutions to businesses1, and the NPD Group recently ranked it as the number six US consumer retail vendor of security software2. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Total Defense’s market opportunity is being driven by the recent explosion in malware – defined as computer viruses, phishing attacks, spam, and web based threats. AV-Test.org has observed that the annual volume of unique malware increased from 1 million to 19 million in the past five years3. At the same time, the nature of those threats is changing. As people conduct more of their lives online – through online banking, e-commerce, social media, and digital communications – more and more criminal activity is following.

“We are looking forward to building Total Defense into a new security leader just as information security challenges, massive data breaches, online predators, and cybercrime are dominating the headlines,” said James Socas, Updata general partner and Total Defense chairman. “The Company has an outstanding leadership team, customer base and loyal partners, and we are delighted to have worked side by side with CA Technologies to create this opportunity.”
